Young talents in the hospitality industry: Anna fights for the championship title in Dortmund!

Königswinter, Deutschland - The youth championships in the hospitality are in full swing again! In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, more precisely in Dortmund, the best talents in the industry gather to measure themselves in their disciplines. This talent promotion is organized by the German Hotel- und Gaststättenverband (Dehoga) and offers the trainees the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

One of the hopeful participants is Anna-Vanessa Schwarze from Hagen. This newly trained hotel manager took a pleasant fourth place last year and is now set to land on the podium. In her first discipline, the turn-down service, she will show how to prepare a room for the guests in the evening. In addition to the practical implementation, Anna also has to identify and document defects in the room. The whole thing does not make her alone: she will also have a reception discussion and present her self-developed tourism concept. "My training made me more open and I love to interact with people," she describes her motivation.

The competition and its disciplines

At the event, trainees from all over North Rhine-Westphalia come together to show their skills in various disciplines. These include:

    Cooking
  • : Here creativity and manual skills are in the foreground under time pressure. Jan Pocha, 20 years old and also a participant, will prepare a demanding four -course menu in a foreign cuisine, which is evaluated by a jury to taste, optics and way of working.
  • Serve
  • : Elegance and precision are required here. The participants must show that they cut an excellent figure in the guest service.
  • Receive and advised: In this discipline, the focus is on communication skills and the professional reception of guests.

The importance of these championships is enormous, because they not only serve the qualification for the German Youth Championships of the training occupations in the hospitality industry, but also to promote future top forces. The best participants even have the opportunity to represent their state at the national level and to show their skills in Königswinter.

challenges of the industry

While the young talents are doing their best, the industry faces challenges. Demographic change leads to fewer school leavers and at the same time more and more young people are opting for studying instead of dual vocational training. This could endanger the future qualification of the youngsters. The competition for employees and trainees is growing, which is why it is important for companies to make the training more attractive and to actively promote further training. According to the dehoga Federal Association it is necessary to ensure the satisfaction of the guests and the sustainable company success.

In addition to the attractiveness of the professional field, an offensive for dual training is required so that future specialists can be obtained. The first progress has already been recognized: The industry expects more new training contracts for 2023 than in 2019. This is a glimmer of hope in times when the hotel and gastronomy are urgently dependent on motivated workers.

Finally, it can be said that the youth championships in the hospitality industry are a wonderful opportunity to present the talents of the industry and at the same time draw attention to the challenges that they face. Both participants and managers are required to set the course for a successful future.
