NRW youth championships: New talents against the shortage of skilled workers!
The NRW youth championships took place in the hospitality industry in Dortmund last weekend. Here 17 trainees from the professions competed against each other. Organized by Dehoga Nordrhein-Westfalen Food, the arrangement of a crab cocktail and covering boards. In addition, the participants had to develop marketing concepts and have sales talks, while a practical examination took place in the iconic IHK forum.A true highlight of the competition was the festive dinner, in which every cook created a unusual four-speed menu from a specified shopping cart. In the meantime, the restaurant and hotel experts were not neglected: they had the important task of covering tables and serving the food and drinks. Hans-Dietmar Wosberg, President of Dehoga North Rhine-Westphalia, congratulated the participants and emphasized the importance of training in the catering trade.

The commitment and creativity of the young talents showed not only in the preparation of the dishes, but also in the results:

These championships are a great opportunity for the trainees to demonstrate their skills and to measure themselves against the best talents from all over Germany.
A look at the challenges of the industry
While the competition is a positive experience for many, the industry actors face great challenges. A current study shows that the situation on the training market looks anything but rosy. With almost 44,000 open areas in the hotel and restaurant area, the shortage of skilled workers remains an urgent problem. An investigation of the institute of the German economy shows that only around 29,000 qualified unemployed are available.
In particular, the hotel industry suffers greatly: 42.8% of the vacancies remain vacant. Last but not least, this deficiency tightened by the Corona pandemic when many people left the industry. DEHOGA sees the youth championships not only as a competition, but also as an important platform for promoting young people in the catering trade in order to actively counteract the shortage of skilled workers.
The challenges remain great, but events like the NRW youth championships are an important step in the right direction. We can only secure the future of our hospitals by promoting the talent and innovative training.
