Travel in Germany 2025: Domestic guests set new records!

Deutschland - The travel and holiday industry in Germany experiences a real boom in 2025. In the first six months of the year, impressive 223.3 million overnight stays in accommodation facilities were counted, which corresponds to a slight increase of 0.1 percent compared to the previous record in the first half of 2024. These figures come from Zeit and show that the German tourism sector has lost nothing of its attraction.

A large part of this success is to be attributed to domestic travelers. You have increased your overnight stays by remarkable 0.8 percent to 187 million. In contrast, there is a decline in foreign guests: their number fell by 3.2 percent to 36.4 million overnight stays. This could also be a direct echo on the 2024 football European Championships, which attracted many tourists in June of the previous year and recorded a decline of 12.6 percent among international visitors in the same month of the current year.

strong June for the accommodation industry

The accommodation companies framed June 2025 with 50.5 million overnight stays, which corresponds to a remarkable increase of 3.8 percent compared to June of the previous year. With an increase, the domestic guests provided a large part of this success with an increase of 7.4 percent to 42.8 million overnight stays. In particular, the Pentecost holidays have prompted many Germans to pack their suitcases and explore their country's beauties.

Nevertheless, the foreign guests had to accept a decline of 12.7 percent to only 7.6 million overnight stays. The already mentioned connection with the European Football Championship could serve as a reason here: In the previous year, the interest of foreign tourists was significantly higher, while in the court of the current summer months, they look at a variety of offers.

trends in the German travel market

A current study also shows that 58 percent of German vacation trips of at least five days do. Around 69 percent of the trips led abroad in 2024, which is a significant plus compared to earlier years; In 2022, the domestic share was 36 percent. Individual trips are coming: 67 percent of travelers prefer this form, while package tours only make up 32 percent. This preference could demand a good knack for representatives of the hotel industry to adapt to the wishes of their clientele.

The study also showed that 74 percent of travelers are important to an uncomplicated arrival and departure. This shows that the logistics of travel is at least as much worth the stay itself. Especially when choosing the travel destinations, voices indicate that many want to avoid the masses of touristy places - 72 percent perceive mass tourism and rely on less overflowing destinations.

With these diverse challenges and opportunities, the German hotel and tourism industry keeps your eyes up: regardless of whether it is about improving guest satisfaction, sustainable offers or just about receiving travelers in an inviting ambience- the dynamics remain unbroken. While numerous considerations of the stability and sustainability of the travel destinations come to the surface in the background, it turns out that the travel enthusiasts remain alive among the Germans.
