Tourism in Rhineland-Palatinate: record numbers and new challenges!
Mainz, Deutschland - In Rhineland-Palatinate, tourism blooms! The current figures show a gratifying increase in the number of guest and overnight stays, which makes 2024 a real success for the industry. With 22.3 million overnight stays, the third highest value has been reached since the surveys. In the first half of 2025, the hotels and holiday accommodations already posted 10.1 million overnight stays and thus exceeded the pre-Corona level of 2019.
Minister of Economics Daniela Schmitt put the remarkable resistance of the industry in the foreground when presenting the Sparkassen-Tourisma Barometer 2025 in Mainz. However, it emphasizes the urgent need for investments in order to further develop the quality, sustainability and diversity of the offers. At this point, the Rhineland-Palatinate savings banks specifically support the companies in expanding their tourist infrastructure.
regional differences and challenges
A look at the different tourist regions draws a mixed picture. While the Ahr Valley can go on a plus of 14 percent of guests and 22 percent in the area of overnight stays, many regions still have to fight for occupancy. Despite increasing satisfaction values-Rhineland-Palatinate ends up in 4th place in Germany in the guest satisfaction-the overall relief of many houses remains low. This applies in particular to the regions of the Mosel-Saar, Hunsrück and Lahntal, where the numbers are partly below those of 2019, as well as [statistics Rlp] (https://www.statistik.rlp.de/themen/finanzen/news/newichtendetails page/tourismus-in-rheinland-pfalz-mehr- and-uebernachtungen-von-hanuar-bis-november-1) reports.
Rheinhessen recorded the highest numbers with 5.5 percent growth, followed by the Naheland and the Eifel. Nevertheless, the entire Rhineland-Palatinate tourism balance in 2024 remains 4.8 percent below the dimensions of 2019, which shows that the way back to normal is still long.
The role of savings banks and digitization
Thomas Hirsch, President of the Sparkassenverband, emphasized the important role of the savings banks as a financing partner for medium -sized companies in tourism. With the help of investments in innovation, digitization and sustainable concepts, companies can not only remain competitive, but also reach new heights. An important factor for the industry, as well as Stefan Zindler, Managing Director of Rhineland-Palatinate Tourismus GmbH, emphasizes: With the Sparkassen-Tourismbarometer, there is a current early warning system that helps to make the necessary decisions.
These developments are particularly important because despite growth in certain areas, the industry faces challenges. The fact that the total number of companies in Rhineland-Palatinate has dropped by 0.7 percent while the bed capacities have increased, illustrates the need to invest in the companies and their offers.
For the future of Rhineland-Palatinate tourism, it should therefore be noted that despite the gratifying statistics this year, the industry must remain vigilant. Investments in quality and new offers are crucial for continuing the positive trend. Rhineland-Palatinate could not only reach the third highest value of overnight stays, but also in the long run as a popular travel region, which the [Tourism Network RLP] (https://rlp.tourismetzwerk.info/2024/15/jahresbil! excited.
