Hotel industry at the turning point: two decisive templates in September!

Schweiz - What's going on in the hotel industry? Exciting times are coming to the industry! In the upcoming autumn session of the parliament, which takes place from September 8th to 26th, two central templates will be discussed, which are of great importance for the future of the hotel industry. As Htr.ch , it is about a package of measures to strengthen the higher vocational training and a Federal Law on the general declaration of general work contracts.

Particular attention is paid to the package of measures, which Hotelleriesuisse recommended without reservation. The aim is to significantly increase the attractiveness of vocational training. Among other things, new title additives such as “Professional Bachelor” and “Professional Master” are to be introduced for degrees of higher vocational training. This initiative is regarded as a crucial step in the fight against the shortage of skilled workers.

specialist shortage and training positions

But what does the reality look like in the field of specialists? According to kofa.de , the number of registered unemployed who is looking for qualified specialist activities, sunk to half of the pre-corona level. At the same time, the number of open spots has increased, but remains below the value of pandemic. This leads to a clearly visible passenger passport in many professions in the industry.

The transition to hotel and restaurant professions is also very declining. While 126,000 people moved from other professions to the industry in 2019, there were only 74,000 in 2021. In addition, the number of applicants for training positions in these professions dropped dramatically - from 33,000 in 2009 to only 12,000 in 2022.

vacant training positions and recommendations

The situation is also shown in the vacant training positions, which are between 18.3% (system catering) and 21.5% (merchants for hotel management). For comparison: on average over all professions, this number is 12.6%. The companies are faced with the challenge of filling apprenticeships more effectively.

The recommendations for hotels and restaurants are clear: the professions must be presented more attractive, whereby aspects such as employment security, perspectives and a balanced work-life balance should be emphasized. A greater commitment in career orientation as well as the targeted recruitment of career changers and foreign employees are also urgently necessary.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the upcoming measures and initiatives not only pursue the goal of improving the training conditions, but also providing the industry as a whole - and this is a development that can welcome everyone involved!
